Great Saves at PNC Park
Wed. Apr 21st 2010

Members of Medic One were honored at a Pirate Game this evening for a call, which happened in February 2010. Crews from MM1 (Jenn Edder, Brooke Lauffer, Darrick Gerano, Jerry Chellman, Steve McIlrath, and Andrew Rzodiewicz) were honored during a pre-game ceremony.

The announcement

On the evening of February 17th 2010, 51 year old Patty Storm was at her family’s home in Export, Westmoreland County, when just after 9pm she suffered a sudden onset of severe chest pain “like a hatchet in her chest”, her son immediately called 911 and  Murrysville Medic One responded. On EMS’s arrival they encountered Patty on the kitchen floor with crushing chest pain, difficulty breathing, and a dangerously low blood pressure. Their team, led by a brand new paramedic, Jennifer Edder, sprang into action, calling for additional medical resources, applying oxygen, initiating IV’s, obtaining an EKG which showed that she was having a heart attack, and summoning the fire department to assist with clearing the driveway of ice and snow so that they could get Patty to their ambulance. Despite all of these efforts Patty was not improving and medications were started to boost her blood pressure and control her nausea, while transport was started to West Penn Hospital, Forbes Regional Campus. On their arrival at Forbes’s emergency department she underwent further assessment and treatment and was then transferred to the cardiac cath lab to address the heart attack that had been identified by Murrysville Medic One.

During this procedure it was diagnosed that the underlying issue was a Aortic dissection, 98% of patients with this diagnosis don’t make it to the hospital alive!

Patty underwent emergency surgery that night to repair the complex dissection, and received 2 coronary artery bypass grafts, spending more than 8 hours in the O.R. She was then admitted to the Cardio-Thoracic ICU, where she would spend the next 20 days, before she was discharged to home on March 9th.

Patty, along with the crew that cared for her that night from Murrysville Medic One are all here to join us this evening!

Thanks Bob Twaddle ( WPAHS)
